The HIMSS conference this year had some key themes that I would like to highlight:

  1. Interoperability is king
    • CMS Administrator Seema Verma announced new MyHealthEData initiative with a strong focus on interoperability, information blocking and patient access
    • Open APIs for data exchange will be required (Apple connects iPhone to EHRs using SMART on FHIR)
    • ONC held numerous meetings regarding TEFCA and information blocking
  2. Artificial intelligence ramping up, while blockchain gets a start
    • IBM Watson Health continues to make inroads in applying cognitive computing
    • HIMSS Blockchain Workgroup facilitates numerous sessions on distributed ledger technology
  3. Cloud infrastructure and hosted services are gobbling up market share
    • Athenahealth highlights benefits of cloud in terms of agility for changes and upgrades
    • Big newcomers Amazon, Google and making a strong presence at show
  4. Value-based care delivery and payment models driving collaboration and analytics
    • Health Catalyst leading this market closely followed by Cerner, Epic, CareEvolution and Caradigm
  5. Industry stakeholder groups such as Sequoia Project, CommonWell, SHIEC, DirectTrust and others seemed to be everywhere at once
    • TEFCA and alternative payment model business drivers highlight need for these types of initatives
