Over the past four years I’ve (Scott Holbrook) had the opportunity to serve on the HIMSS National Board with many marvelously committed and talented people. It has been an amazing experience to see all the volunteers’ commitment to making the healthcare industry better. HIMSS today has more than 52,000 individual members and over 3,000 volunteers. Each volunteer sacrifices personal and professional time to make our industry better.
I have been in the industry for over forty years, and I have found that healthcare people are giving and generous. They have passion for the industry and making improvements. Each year around 1,000 vendors come to the HIMSS annual conference to tell their story. Over 30,000 people gather, who all have a common interest. It’s an amazing site!! If you are nostalgic like me, then you will love HIMSS. In many ways, HIMSS is like an annual “high School reunion”, where I see many friends and renew relationships.
Since some people refer to healthcare as a cottage industry—an industry which includes many producers, working from their homes, typically parttime. We’ve seen businesses raise from the confines of a small group of smart people at home or small office. Hundreds of companies have started at home and blossomed from an idea into a company. In the 1970’s, I left IBM to work for McAuto. Shortly after I arrived at McAuto, three very smart people (Walt Huff, Bruce Barrington and Richard Owens) left McAuto to build a company called HBO. This revolutionary approach to order communications had customers waiting in line for months, and it built the basis of the company now known as McKesson.
You may have been involved in some cottage industry start-ups. . .I experienced this to some degree with MedSeries, KLAS, Park City Solutions and Medicity. Each year I could not wait to get to HIMSS to show my friends what we had built. HIMSS gives these companies a place to showcase and launch the ideas. It’s exciting to see the new creative thoughts and listen to the ideas. The energy is electric!! HIMSS has many tracks that help each of us professionally. It helps us formulate ideas and shape the future.
Truly, the best thing about HIMSS is spending time with people who have helped shaped your career. Sharing “war stories” and getting advice. It’s fun to learn at the feet of others and share the enthusiasm that makes healthcare a compelling place to work. HIMSS is a Super Fantastic experience each year. I invite each of you to roll-up-your sleeves and enjoy the HIMSS experience.
