Technology

Medicity’s unique combination of agent-grid technology and a service-oriented architecture (SOA) offers our customers the industry’s most flexible, adaptable, scalable, extendable, and robust health information exchange (HIE) solutions.

Agent-grid Technology: HIE in the Trenches

Facilitating care collaboration and provider workflow one physician at a time

Medicity’s patented agent-grid technology enables last-mile connectivity in physician practices, hospitals, and other healthcare organizations – while integrating with the technology already in use at each organization.

A grid is formed when HIE participants download a small piece of software called an agent. These agents communicate securely with each other over the Internet – performing simple workflow tasks like automating the distribution and receipt of clinical information, filtering, and report generation – and employ persistent, message-based communication to enable providers to collaborate electronically.

Why is agent-grid computing such a robust option for HIE?

  • It takes little time and effort to install and is easy to maintain, support, and upgrade.
  • It integrates with existing office technology, like an EHR or PMS.
  • No central hardware or repository is required.
  • It is highly scalable and mass deployable.

Cloud Services: Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) in the Cloud

Connecting communities of care throughout regions, states and the nation

Medicity’s solutions in the cloud utilize a service-oriented architecture (SOA) – an architectural concept designed around loosely-coupled, interacting software components called services. These easily adapted services interact to create a flexible and scalable solution well-suited to the diverse business and technological requirements of the ever-changing healthcare IT market.

Services in the cloud enable such HIE functionality as:

  • Data aggregation across the HIE.
  • Identity management services to reconcile data with different identifiers.
  • Standardization of proprietary data into accepted vocabularies and formats.
  • Connection to state, regional, and national networks.

Working Together: SOA in the Cloud + Agent-grid on the Ground

Cloud computing is perfect for remotely hosted applications and HIE services like registries, identity management, record locator services, and more. But, by itself, it is insufficient to accomplish all of the technology needs required of an HIE. The reality is that applications and services running in the cloud must be seamlessly connected to applications, services, and devices running on the ground. In other words, cloud computing needs a complementary technology that handles the “ground operations.”

That is why our unique combination of on-the-ground and in-the-cloud technologies offers the most robust, widely adopted, and successful HIE solution on the market.
