To track patient records from different departmental systems, hospitals use a master patient index (MPI)—one authoritative database of patient demographic information against which to match patient data.

Many legacy MPIs use one algorithm to sort out records from all of the systems in the organization. Eventually, its size and complexity become nearly unworkable. And every time the algorithm is adjusted to improve its accuracy or accommodate system changes, it breaks.
